From January 1997 until March 2004, SWITCH hosted and operated the Swiss SunSITE server. It was a collaborative effort of cnlab, Sun Microsystems (Schweiz) AG and SWITCH

Swiss SunSITE was an Ultra Enterprise Server 3000 equipped with four 248 MHz UltraSPARCTM-II processors and 1.2 GByte of RAM. It housed ten internal 4 GByte drives and used at the end up to 1 TByte external storage via Fibre Channel, NFS and SCSI.

At the end of March 2004 the server got replaced and now the service is named SWITCHmirror with the easy to remember hostname mirror.switch.ch.
The old hostname sunsite.cnlab-switch.ch will be kept as an alias for the next few years, since the service was so popular.
